No Jobs In Calgary?

I remember when I was in High School, I was working at McDonalds as a 16 year old, our crew was multi cultural, I was saving money for my first vehicle which was a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire. It wasn’t the ideal job for me, flipping burgers. But I loved it. I also worked at Tim Hortons and KFC as a teenager, now every time I go on Reddit, Facebook and other social media articles, all I see is “the rising unemployment rate in Calgary“.

As a father of 2 boys, I fear for my children’s future, not just mine, but young people in general. I’m not against immigration, or foreign workers, but give these children hopes. Even the adults are having a tough time looking for a job. Hopefully by creating this platform(What’s Up Calgary), I help and connect local businesses and locals to find job opportunities or even just point them in the right direction.  Local businesses, let’s help each other out, and for you new comers, please adapt to our culture.

“Calgary’s unemployment rate rose to almost nine per cent in June, a statistic that worries advocates as the city’s poverty gap widens.

According to the latest data from Statistics Canada, Calgary’s unemployment rate rose to 8.5 per cent, 0.4 percentage points higher than May’s.

This is higher than the national average of 6.4 per cent and higher than other major cities like Vancouver (5.6 per cent), Toronto (7.8 per cent), Montreal (6.2 per cent) and Edmonton (7.1 per cent). It is also the highest rate for the second consecutive month among major Canadian cities, with Toronto in second place.

However, Statistics Canada said the figures may fluctuate widely because they are based on small statistical samples.

Kate Koplovich, director of strategy for the Calgary Economic Development, said Calgary’s unemployment rate indicates that the city’s population growth has outpaced its labour force growth.”

What we’re seeing is a rise in our unemployment rate is mostly due to our population growth.
